Beaches of Kerala- A Quick Glance
by ushar
Kerala is known throughout the world as one of the world's best beach destinations. The beaches of Kerala are beautiful stretches of clean sand, fringed by swaying palm trees on one side and rippling waves on the other.
Relax on the golden sands of the beaches of Kerala, stretch out in the shade of the rows of palm trees along the beaches, drink the refreshing juice of a tender coconut and have an ayurvedic masseur.
1. Kovalam Beach: Consisting of three crescent shaped beaches, called Lighthouse, Hawah and Samudra Beaches, Kovalam is one of the best beaches in Kerala with golden sand, waving palm trees and rolling waves. Have fun at Kovalam on Kerala beach tours with Kerala Backwater.
Kovalam, is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches of Kerala.
2. Varkala Beach: Located 54 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Varkala Beach is a calm sandy beach with a background of rocky cliffs. Known as the Papanasam beach, this beautiful locale is situated near a 2000-year-old temple and a popular Ayurvedic treatment center.
Varkala Beach is a quiet and isolated sandy expanse where you can have a relaxing beach holiday without the crowds and bustle of some of the busier beaches in Kerala.
3.Kappad Beach: Located 16 Km from Kozhikode town, Kappad Beach is known throughout Kerala as the site where Vasco do Gama, the Portuguese explorer, landed in 1498, beginning a new era in the history of Kerala.
4.Marari Beach: Named after Mararikulam, a nearby fishing village, Marari beach is located between Cochin and Alappuzha. The beaches here are breathtakingly beautiful with long stretches of pristine beaches fringed with graceful palm trees. You can see fisher folk from the fishing village practice their traditional occupation while on Marari Beach in Kerala
5.Bekal Beach is located at a distance of 14 Km from Kasargod in Kerala, India. The Bekal Beach area is being promoted as a tourist destination and the beautiful sandy beach backed by swaying palm trees is truly worth seeing. The serene atmosphere, the sandy stretches of unspoilt beaches and the mesmeric rhythm of the waves as they roll up to the Bekal Beach make it an idyllic beach destination in Kerala. The nearest airport to Bekal Beach is Mangalore in Karnataka, India, which is 50 Km away. Kasargod is connected by rail and road to the rest of Kerala
6.Sankhumugham Beach : Sankhumugham Beach is very near to Trivandrum Internationational Airport and 8 kms away from the Trivandrum city. Sunset watching is interesting to viewers. where is best?
by danstrak
I am from the U.K and am planning to go to Kerala for a week in Feb. I would ideally like to be based on a quiet, relaxing beach in a clean hotel. But I would also like to be able to do day trips to some of the "must visit" places in Kerala.
So far I have come up with Marari Beach ( seems to be quiet and well located near Cochin) but the only accommodation I can find there seems to be pretty expensive ($200 per night)
Any ideas on nice quiet beautiful beaches which are well located for day trips would be hugely appreciated.
Also, do you think it is worth going to kerala for just one week( flying from the U.K)

In Cochin nice accomodations are available from $10 onwards If you are particular about beach house stay it will be costly. If you can tell about the places of visits and days of visit .Reasonably good accomodation s can be spotted and I can give you the apprximate costs

Thanks for the replies. I don't suppose you know if there are any private villas to rent in either of the 2 places you mentioned?
Thanks,

General Info on getting around Kerala
by BeckJPark
My husband and I have booked flights to Kerala in Jan arriving at TRV airport. We are planning on visiting Kollam, Alleppey, Cochin, Munnar, Periyar and Kovalam (and maybe one other beach destination, undecided as yet). Having looked in to hotels and what to see and do we are pretty sorted for those but was wondering if anyone could offer us some advice on how best to get from place to place either by road or rail. Ideally would like to do this without a tour package as have experienced this before in India and although enjoyed it, it can get tedious!

How to get from one place to another in Kerala? It is easy. You can take trains or buses as you find it convenient. However for some places you need to take a bus..example to Periar,Munnar as these are hill stations/resorts.
There is a good net work of bus transport with good frequency. However i prefer trains because the journey is sceneic and wonderful.
Suggest that from Trivandrum go to Kovalam. (about 15kms by road)
Return to Trivandrum and go to Kollam and to Alleppey.(by train or by bus)
From Alleppey take a bus to Periyar(Kumily) and then to Munnar by bus (aboout 100kms).
From Munnar take a bus to Cochin.
To have one more beach destination suggest you to have Varkala nearer to Trivandrum about 45kms.
Have a nice trip.
