Alleppey Beach Resort

by aligirl

Hi to VT’s in Alleppey,

Could any of you help me with information on The Alleppey Beach Resort?
We stayed at this place last year and would like to do so again. Problem is I don’t know if they have closed down, or if they have changed their email address because my emails are being sent back. I don’t know how else to get in touch with them for a booking.

I would also like to find out if a trip by boat is possible from Cochin to Alleppey, one way only. If there is, how long would it take and how much would it cost for 6 people?

Hi, Read your forum entry just now. Yes as far as I know the Alleppy Beach Resort is still there and you must be able to contact them on 00 91 477 263408 or visit them at There are equally or more exciting places to explore in Kerala including the Malabar region. If you need any help drop me a line. I am based in Kozhikode. All the best.
Cheers, Kris (KK MAr)

Travel Tips for Alappuzha

by Willettsworld

The Keralan name of the house boats you'll see all around Alappuzha and the Backwaters are known as Kettuvallam - in the Malayalam language "kettu" means tying and “vallam” means country boat. A kettuvallam is about 67 feet in length and has a width of around 13 feet in the middle. The materials that go into the making of them are local and ecofriendly; bamboo poles, coconut fibre, ropes, bamboo mats, carpets etc. The main wood used is "Anjili" (Artocarpus hirsuta). Houseboats come with fully furnished single room, double room and triple rooms and are mainly used for tourists along the Backwaters. You'll see loads of them moored up at the Nehru Trophy Starting Point on the Punnamada Lake plus along the North Canal in town.

"water water everywhere not a drop to drink"

Alleppey is 156 km from trivandrum.Once a thriving business center for trading with other countries through sea route now it has become a sleepy town where tourists land for a backwater cruise.

Alleppey is criss crossed with canals connecting sea and the lake. There are numerous islands were people live. Some times one small green patch surrounded by water is occupied by a single family with cows , and a small vegetable garden. some larger ones may even have a school and some temples and churches. Just like we have roads in front of the house they have canals in the backyard. They have to get everything for their daily livelihood including water from the town, hence a hand rowed small boat is a mode of transport for everyone. Even children are adept at rowing. All activity, cleaning, washing clothes, bathing, rearing ducks, everything is done in the canal. . Come monsoon life becomes miserable with flooding and water born epidemics.

back water cruises take you through their backyards and give you a glimpse of their lifestyle
alleppey is also famous for the boat races which take place during onam. Community sponsored boats are entered in to the races and are vigorously contested .

kuttanadu area is also known as the rice bowl of kerala. Harvesting time is an exciting period to visit alleppey.

why do i love alleppey?

this is unlike any other place i have lived . People who's lives depend solely on waterways and who are enterprising and most of all survivors.
