You can contact Mr. Jose Akarakalam of Penguin Boat services near the Alleppey bus stand.
He is a local person and a nice guy. He can help you with lot of activities around that area..
Keraleeyam Lake resort (Alleppey), Coconut Lagoon ( ideal place to spend a day at least), visits to coir factory visit, Tile factory visit... there are many things you can do there.

I only spent a day and a night in this pleasant town. The town is easy to negotiate. There are two main canals (north and south), which makes it easy to orientate yourself.
Alleppey (as most people still call the place) seems to be the centre and main area to organise backwater trips. There are plenty of houseboats and tour operators to choose from.
