Travel Tips for Hiroshima
Miyajima Island.
by Sharrie
27 mins by train + 10 mins by ferry from Hiroshima is the celebrated shrine on Miyajima island.
Acclaimed to be one of the 3 most beautiful spots in Japan, Itsukush ma Shrine is a must for everyone who made it as far as Hiroshima. Give yourself at least 4 hours to discover the beauty of this island. I shall upload all my photos of this amazing little island when VT has a locator for it. In the mean time, please proceed to its official site for further information.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
by Zirpsis
On August the 6th 1945 at 8:15 in the morning, the world's first atomic bomb exploded in the air above the town of Hiroshima. The blast burned and totally destroyed a vast area and instantaneously killed tens of thousands of people.
The Peace Memorial Museum was built in 1955 to preserve and convey to the future generations the facts about the tragedy. They have gathered drawings and testimonials of people who witnessed the whole thing. You can also see pictures, films and actual artefacts from after the bombing, a watch stopped at 8:15, melted items of various materials etc. You can also get a lot of facts about the effect of radiation on humans and how the victims were treated. This is heavy stuff.
Open from 8:30 to 18:00 or 19:00.
Admission fee: 50 yen.
Monument to the Mobilised Students
by Blatherwick
I found this monument to be an interesting one. On one hand, it makes you sad that all of those children died. On the other hand, you feel sad that child labour had to be employed in the first place.

"Hiroshima"
Its a strange feeling walking around Hiroshima and feeling the sense of history and echoes of the terrible event that took place there...
The museum is worth visiting and if you get the chance, try to get to meet a survivor of the bomb - they sometimes talk at the museum.. I found the experience I had of meeting a survivor changed the way I felt about nuclear weapons - now I feel they should all be destroyed worldwide and should not be kept - even as a deterrent
