by mafi_moya The Hilton brand is much the same all over the world. On the plus side you know you're guaranteed excellent service, luxurious rooms and a completely hassle-free stay. On the downside there's little evidence of the local culture inside those air-conditioned pristine white walls. It leaves a nasty dent in your wallet too. The Colombo Hilton has everything you'd expect and is an excellent place to stay. It overlooks Beira Lake in the heart of the city, is within walking distance of the Indian Ocean and Galle Face Green, and can offer sauna, limousines, gymnasium, tennis courts... anything you want really.
Best of all are the superb restaurants - you can take a tour of unbeatable food from around the world without leaving the hotel: Ginza (Japanese), Il Ponte (Italian - also does takeaways), Emperor's Wok (Chinese), The Curry Leaf (excellent local Sri Lankan cuisine), and best of all, Spoons serving a delicious mix of everything! Entertainment-wise there's the Blue Elephant nightclub and the English colonial style Echelon pub. There's also middle-of-the-road music at night in the lobby. By foot, head north up Galle Road towards Fort and the clocktower - you'll soon see the towering World Trade Centre next door.

This is an upscale, great service, attractive hotel. For me personally, it's not the place in Colombo I would feel most comfortable at the moment. Once in the hotel you don't have any sense of the country's current security situation ... but the area the hotel is in, Fort, is the part of the city with the tightest security presence. For me, the glitz wasn't worth that. There are more checkpoints and more nervousness among the soldiers in this area, because it is a central army location and used to be a target during the incidents in the early 80s. Soldiers and guns are evident in many parts of town, but they really are in this area. Some people get used to this and so they will recommend the Hilton. I think there are other really nice Colombo hotels in areas with less intense security presence.
Impressive, tho not cheap, fitness facilities.
