Airport to Negombo, How Much? Best method? Nice accomadation?

by andytwigg

We are travelling from England to Sri Lanka on the 1st of August.
Rather than heading into Colombo, it seems a much shorter distance to head straight for Negombo.
I am travelling with my wife and 7yr old boy.

Can anyone help with How much should I pay for this trip?

What is the best method, Taxi or Local Bus? And the best place to get the method of transport from the Airport.

Any recommendations for the Negombo. A place with a pool but not a large hotel?

We have travelled a lot in Thailand, is the Hotel situation the same, as in most small guesthouses have a small pool, or is this not the case.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Andy,

a) Taxis are fixed-price from the airport. Negombo, depending on the part of town, will be around Rs 500-1000 so less than 10 pounds. Buses are unfeasible for a newcomer. The desk to arrange the taxi is next to the banks in Arrivals.

b) Guesthouses usually don't have a pool, hotels have them starting from 2-star. Not much personal experience in Negombo in the segment that you mention.

Regards,

& [Sandya]

Andy,
Try Pegasus Reef Hotel, Handela, Wattala. This isnt a very large hotel and reasonable prices + pool and close to Colombo Airport. Also located near pretty Unawatuna beach.

Good luck and have fun in Sri Lanka.

Take a taxi. Taxi is cheap and efficient. Negombo is about ten minutes from the airport.

Tell the driver to wait while you look at different hotels and decide which has the nicest pool for you. The hotels on the beach side of the road have pools. The guest houses on the other side of the road do not have pools.

I like the Sunflower hotel, the best. If you want to be in a retirement home of old English people who are too tired to swim in the pool, stay at the Golden Star Hotel. If you want to be surrounded by chubby old German people doing jazzercise in the pool, stay at the Brown's Beach Hotel.

Last time I was in Negombo, I was at the Golden Star. The pool hosted swimming lessons for local 7-year-old schoolchildren.

I think that it kind of depends on your personal preference, as to which beachfront hotel would have the best pool for you.

You're right not to go into Colombo. It's a painfully long taxi-ride with a lot of stop-and-traffic during most of the day and evening, and even with a careful driver, the ride can induce motion sickness, which would be dreadful after just landing.
