    The Jungle

    by

Another interesting place to stay is La Selva - we actually tried to stay there first, but it was full, so i advise you to book this one. There are quite some people that stay at this place to study the environment!
It is set in "La Selva Biological Station" and i was told that at this lodge you have the best guides to explore the surroundings.
It must be a full experience to stay here!

Tropical forest in the Carribean lowlands

    by

Unique Quality: This facility is adjacent to a National park. I have to say that the property is the most lushest part of a jungle that I have seen in Costa Rica. The facilities are first class and you will enjoy a stay here

In the middle of the Rain Forest

    by

Selva Verde Lodge is a rainforest lodge dedicated to educating its guests on the wonders and natural beauty of Costa Rica's unique and fragile tropical rainforest.
Is located in the lush lowlands of northeastern Costa Rica on a very large, private tract of virgin tropical rainforest and rich second-growth habitats.
You get to stay on bungalows that are a couple of meters from the ground and you can hear and see loads of birds!!

Directions: On the main road you'll see signs

the selva verde lodge is an excellent place to stay to experience a costa rican rain forest. the hotel is american owned and the staff speaks english. the rooms are small wooden bungalows on stilts connected to the lobby and restaurant by wooden cat walks. the hotel is located on a large tract of private land. the rio sarapiqui flows through the property. the hotel offers guides to lead you through rain forest trails and explain the flora and fauna. you can also book a river tour which is very interesting. located in the rain forest you will see all kinds of tropical plants and animals.

My favourite hotel in Costa Rica

by Strombus about Selva Verde Lodge

Selva Verde Lodge is located in the North-Central Lowlands of Costa Rica, in Sarapiquí county, 2 hours drive from San José or the Arenal Volcano. It provides peaceful and comfortable accomodiation in its spacious rooms to nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, hikers.
One can observe many birds, butterflies, frogs, plants right on site. The hotel also offers bird watching tours and jungle tours. They are fun and very educational.
We spent one night here, but wished to have more. Rain forest right at your door. Amazing variety and number of birds. Great place to relax.

Rest in a hammock at Selva Verde

by no1birdlady about Selva Verde Lodge

This place is more primitive with thatched roofed buildings on raised platforms. The dining hall building is 2 stories and is screened in all around. Wooden walkways lead between the clusters of rooms. It's located in the lush lowlands of northeastern Costa Rica. There are a lot of great jungle trails where you can see a lot of wildlife or you can sit on your porch and watch birds. The rooms are open at the top and have ceiling fans. Food here is a set menu served in a line in the dining room. Food was ok. The best thing here is the wildlife. There is a stream with wonderful birds along it. We met most mornings here at 5:30 to go birding during the "dawn chorus". Then we went to breakfast about 6:30 and then went out birding for the day.

Eco-Tourist mecca

by frank_delargy about Selva Verde

This is a rather well know eco-tourist hotel east of San Jose and south of Arenal. It has plenty of wildlife on the grounds and I believe that they provide lots of tours, though we were not there long enough to take advantage of them.
They have great Golden Orb spider, Poison dart frogs, Jesus Christ lizards (walk on water), hummingbirds, orependula and tons of other creatures too!
We did see a sloth here.
Check out the gardens across the street.
(Picture provided by Selva Verde) It blends well into the environment for a hotel.. They have decent food and cater to American / European food options while still providing local dishes.
There is a great bridge over the river that runs by the hotel. Walk across the bridge toward some conservation land with jungle trails with monkeys, etc.

Activities Near Selve Verde Lodge

by Graciej

We are staying at Selve Verde in June and are interested in recommendations regarding activities in the area. There are so many good options - hiking right at the lodge, wildlife floats on the river, hikes and classes at Tirimbini Refuge.

What do you recommend? And for the activities that are off-site, can we use the public bus? Taxi? Selve Verde offers transportation services, but they seem expensive.

Thanks!

That is one of my favorite areas. It is real rainforest so do be prepared for some rain. Not all the time though.

Tirimbina is a great place to hike. We just walked around their main grounds because we didn't have time to really go across the bridge and spend time in the reserve. We saw great birds just around the main area. La Selva which is the Organization for Tropical Studies is also a great place. You do need reservations for a guide and hike in La Selva. Tirimbina offers guides for hire but you can go alone.

The Sarapiqui river is fun. Aguas Bravas is near Selva Verde so it shouldn't cost much to get there. They offer float tours and white water as well as horseback. I have heard good reports about Pozo Azul.

There is a garden you can walk through at Hotel El Bambu.

The Centro for Neotropical Studies is interesting. The Alma Ata Archaeological Park is not huge but interesting. They also have a botanical garden.

Selve Verde Lodge has people who can guide you deep into the rainforest. As deep as you got time and leg stength (cause you really get stuck in the mud with the rubber boots).

Honestly that's the best thing to do there. You can call up a taxi to pick you up and go to the local town but its just a regular small town stuff. Across the street is a butterfly farm you can see.
