soon to be in paris with my wife...not enough money to stay in hotels...
looking for help choosing nice (private?) hostels?

Try the Auberge Internationale des Jeunes, a fine centrally located hostel at 10 rue Trousseau just five minutes from the Bastille. By all means avoid the squalid, teeming lice-infested hovel which is the Hotel Aviatic in the Quartier Latin.

Nice isn't nice at this time of year - too hot, too crowded.
Hotels might not be more expensive than a hostel. I used to stay in hostels when I travel around Europe with my husband. But nowadays, we go for hotels cos they might not be more expensive than the hostels.
For hotels in Paris, I would recommend you to try www.ratestogo.com. I paid Euro43 for a double (ensuite room with TV) with breakfast in a 2 star hotel.
