Probably the best for atmosphere, location ( 1 block to Seine) and 3 blocks to Notre Dame. Helpful service staff, small but delightful rooms with street views and breakfast delivered to your room is a great start to the day.
Unique Quality: Location, view of city life, proximity to shops and restaurants, Metro is outside the door.

Hôtel Victoria Châtelet
This small cosy hotel located in a good location close to the Sein River and to the Notre Dame. It is by metro stop as well as many bars and restaurants around.

Hotel in the First Arr.
Another small hotel, just four storeys, located in the First Arr. a few blocks from the Louvre and nearly on the river across from Ile de la Cite. This hotel's rooms have cable tv and a safe and are en suite with either bath or shower. Close to les Halles and Chatelet which is a major transportation hub (though the tunnels and walks can be lengthy to get from one area to another). You can have a continental breakfast (for a fee) in your room if you like but Rue de Rivoli is handy enough to find a cafe in the morning. We've not stayed here but it was recommended to us by a friend who has used it in the past.
Unique Quality: Excellent location, right by the river and across from Notre Dame and the Left Bank, steps from the Louvre. Rates are reasonable. Doesn't seem to be online booking on their website, but you can fill out a form online for reservation inquiries and they will get back to you by email.

Chatelet is the center of Paris : a crossroad of the major RER and metro lines.
From this place you are some minutes from everywhere in Paris walking or by the metro.
In the neighborhood : quai de la Megisserie (pet shops), theatre du Chatelet (music), Notre Dame, Sainte Chapelle, Conciergerie (the prison of Louis XVI), place St Michel (the core of Quartier Latin), Louvre, Rue de Rivoli, Le Marais.
Often the VTers ask for a hotel fairly priced in the center. You cannot find a more central hotel (excepted the Hotel Britannique which is located in front) and you can estimate if the price is fair.
