Getting CZK in Paris

by goossen

Hello,

I will be on Paris the next month. It's our honeymoon!! :D

Our next stop is Prague, and I'd like to know where to get some Czech Korunas in Paris; because I've read about many scams when trying to exchange currency in Prague.

Any info will be welcomed. Thanks in advance!

Just use your ATM card once you get in Czech republic. It is the safest way to obtain the best rate.

The ATMs are the way to go. No hassle and they do not seem predisposed to rip off tourists. It certainly worked for us in Prague (and elsewhere).

yes, use ATMs in Prague.
I know what you mean when being riped off there. In fact, if you know good and honest place exactly then you're fine changing into Koruna. But many of these exchange offices are best to avoid.

Have a great time on your honeymoon, May is perfect time to visit Prague (even if it rains, at least it's not too cold:).

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure about ATMs, because my debit card won't work overseas and charges for cash advance for credit cards are a little high for me.

I can see not using your CC for cash advance but I don't understand why your ATM card would not work overseas. Look in the back to see what systems it is compatible with or ask your bank about it.

We had this same issue last year and we just changed a bit of $ when we arrived in the train station in Prague (find out how much you will need to get to your hotel and just change a bit more) and changed the rest in Prague--we were ripped off in the main city centre--avoid those places. We found honest (as far as $ exchangers go) in the lesser town--right after we got off the bridge on the street that flowed off the bridge there was a great place (next to a restaurant) that gave us a good rate. the street is full of souvenier shops and I think there were a couple of other $ exchange houses that seemed honest as well. (the problem in the city centre was you had to change a lot of $ to get a good rate, but they did not make that clear).

The problem with my ATM card is that is not a VISA or MASTERCARD. It's just a national card called "Infonet". I'm sure it wont work abroad.

Travel Tips for Paris

claustrophobics need not apply here!

by morgane1692

Another in a growing list of Favorite Memories of Paris: our hike up the tiny, winding, stone staircases here at the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral. Yes, there are over 300 of these cramped, little steps to contend with on your trek up (and back down...,) but ohhhhh! the views of the city from the top are spectacular!

Bridges crossing the Seine

by kris-t

Pont Neuf : is the oldest standing bridge across the river Seine in Paris. The bridge was completed under the reign of Henry IV, who inaugurated it in 1607.

Pont des Arts: links the Institut de France and the central square of the palais du Louvre. Paris has 37 bridges across the Seine, of which 3 are pedestrian only and 2 are rail bridges...

Paris Tip

Fete National Fireworks - This is the most spectacular fireworks display I have ever seen. And what made it so much better was the silhouette of Le Tour Eiffel in the foreground. We used an entire film taking photos of the display - some of which I will eventually scan and put in the travelogue.

For that essential gift for your host *6e

by shrimp56

If you are fortunate enough to be invited to a French family's house for dinner you must bring a small gift. Wine is out, because it looks as though you are not expecting them to serve good wine. Flowers are standard -- not chrysanthemums though as they are associated with funerals. It is better form to send them either before or after the dinner. This is both so the hostess doesn't have to break her routine and find a vase and so your flowers will not be compared with [and possibly outshine ] someone else's.
.
This is a cute little shop on rue Saints-Peres, just around the corner from Hotel du Danube on rue Jacob. The little flower pots in the tiny watering can were pricey -- 12 euros. But they are very chic. I brought them several times and my hosts seemed pleased.

Spring in porte d'Auteuil

by Norali

Spending some day(s) watching Roland-Garros tennis matches ... That would be the ultimate Paris sport event to attend for me. Why ?
- Tennis is a passion. Used to be an Edberg & Graff fan. Those were my idols from when I started until the 90s. Later on, there were other top-players I use(d) to admire. Name Seles, Ivanisevic, Sampras, Hénin-Ardenne, Federer.. etc.. Strange enough, amongst those male top-players I use to admire, Federer was the only to have won RG titles. Great he seems to have just started his reign. ;
- The tournament is in Spring & Spring is the best time to live in European cities for me, at least, Paris & Brussels. As Roland-Garros is an "outdoor" tournament, I think it would be a great time in Paris;
- I still love clay tennis as it allows more room for the show. Exciting fights, esp. when you see Nadal playing.

Someday...

Btw, did you know that watching RG tennis matches as a kid was one of factors which had convinced Justine Hénin-Ardenne to give the professional tennis playing a try ? And what a try... Good & wise decision from her Mom to bring her there. Not too casual as the Porte d'Auteuil fauna is quite chic. I would even recommend sport chic. Plus, it is not unusual to see business suits in Porte d'Auteuil as some would spend some hours there after work.

Anyway, it is not that you attend tennis matches that you should sport bulky trainers & sweatpants. ;-)

Bring raincoat & umbrella & sunglasses.
