Travel across to THASSOS...

Travel across to THASSOS island and go to GOLDEN BEACH for a super swim and a great lunch at the Fedra taverna. The uncrowded sandy beach and just a short walk from a selection of tavernas. After a morning walk to SKALA POTAMIA and a quick swim off to the taverna for an iced cold Mythos lager.. HEAVEN!!!!
Cooling off by the Panagia

I only stopped in Kavala on my way between Xanthi and Thessaloniki and thus was not able to take advantage of this beautiful swimming and suntanning spot, but several children and a few German women were making the best of it. If you climb up to the Panagia and explore around Mehmet Ali's house and the church, you'll notice some steps leading down the cliff. These can be taken down to the rocks below where it is possible to swim in the cove and sunbathe (there was no shortage of strong sun). The cove is fairly secluded and quiet, but there is no lifeguard or supervision. A swimsuit and good shoes - the trek down is not to be done in flipflops!
Mehmet Ali's house
by prleprle
Situated in the Seraidaris Garden is the typical 18. century Turkish house-the birthplace of Mehmet Ali, the founder of the last Egyptian royal line . This finelly preserved building has fine panelling and carved wooden beams. Below the house are both the stables and kitchen and above you’ll find Ali’s harem and the pasha’s quarters. There is a bronze statue of Ali in the small square just beyond the building on the square.
Kavala

"A good day out"
I went to Kavala for the day when I was holidaying on the island of Thassos. I found it to be a very pleasant town with a good shopping centre, a busy port and an old castle overlooking the coast. There is also an old aquaduct that dates from the Turkish period and Mehmet Ali who would go on to rule Egypt was born here. His house is a museum.
Its a short hop from Thassos by Flying Dolphin and well worth the trip.
Walking in Paul's Footsteps....

My trip included Kavala, Thessilonicki, Aspavartos, and Phillipi (did I spell all those correctly?)
The aquaducts were impressive and in magnificant shape. Look for the houses that are built in between a couple of the arches.
We stayed at the Ocenview Hotel. I think that it was in the Prefecture of Kavala. Beautiful hotel! This is a view from my balcony! That is the Aegean Sea. The hotel has private beach too. Frank and Kiki are the owners and speak excellent English! Afterall, they did leave the States to come back to Greece and set up shop!
