1800's Charleston Charm

The Wentworth Mansion was built between 1885 and 1887 as a private mansion for Francis Rodgers who was a shipping and cotton magnate. Rodgers was also instrumental in setting up the first paid fire department in Charleston and would watch for fires from the Cupola atop the mansion. Today, the Cupola is a great spot to get a good 360 degree view of the city.

The mansion is wonderfully restored and is absolutely beautiful to walk through. Historic Photos hang on the walls giving you a feel for old Charleston. All of the work and southern hospitality have paid off. Conde Nast ranked it #34 on the top 100 hotels in America. Travel and Leisure rated it #40 on their list in 2007.

Unique Quality: Almost everything about the hotel is unique! Our room (room 1) was on the first floor (below the entrance level) and was absolutely huge. In addition to the bedroom it included a hot-tub, walk in shower, private outside patio, and reading room. The Cupola will provide great views, a complementary breakfast (Bacon, grits, waffles, etc.) will get you going in the morning. Complementary Port, Sherry, and Cognac will help you settle down in the evening. The Circa 1886 restaurant is outstanding and there is a spa on-site as well.

Welcoming, spotless, elegant

If Ritz Carlton properties were small and privately run, the Wentworth Mansion would be one. It's a designer or architect's dream: beautifully decorated with lovely fabrics, wallpaper, antiques or reproductions and a restoration job that takes your breath away. The staff bends over backwards for you (housekeeping is a bit lax in some small details, but overall, they do a fine job). There's a fabulous breakfast, cocktail hour and post dinner drinks in the library, all on the house. But, I must be honest: not everyone will adore the location. it's ten to fifteen minutes walk to shopping at King Street....and probably twice that to the Battery. It's right in a beautifully restored residential area of town, where it's quiet and tranquil. It's not in the heart of the tourist area. But, we like it that way. Wentworth Mansion has a FREE parking lot, you can always get a cab to go into the busy part of Charleston and who would want to hear all of that noise from commerce and tourists if you were in a city center hotel? Not me, anyway. We adore this inn.

More about Wentworth Mansion

Loved the Wentworth Mansion

by TripAdvisor Member miltie

WE absolutely LOVED the Wentworth Mansion. The mansion is gorgeous, lovingly maintained, and is perfect in every way. Our bedroom had an amazing huge bathroom, the bedroom had cuddly sheets and pillows and was beautifully appointed with all the extra frills anyone could ever desire(bath products, up to date travel magazines, thick and soft bath towels etc. etc.)
The service was perfect, but never in a way that would make anyone uncomfortable. The staff went out of there way to be helpful (restarant recommendations and directions, tickets for events, breakfast served in our room etc. etc.) And of course the spa___AMAZING!
We very rarely go back to the same hotel as we like new experiences-----but we will for SURE retun to the Wentworh---it is a very special treat!

Great Historic Location

The Wentworth Mansion was more than we hoped for....we stayed in the East Wing because it was a little less expensive and our room was very charming and spacious. We had a huge bathroom / dressing area and our own balcony. People were great, very helpful on entertainment / dinner recommendations. It is a little bit of a walk to the historic district so wear comfortable shoes if walking to dinner etc... we will definatley stay there again. The resteraunt, Circa was closed on Sunday so Magnolia's, High Cotton, and 82 Queen were our favorite dinning choices. 82 Queen has a beautiful patio garden to sit outside - very romantic.

absolute best place to stay

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Wentworth Mansion. Let me say, It was an awesome treat. The accomodations were exquisite. The hospitality was spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. From the moment we were greeted at the door to welcome us in until the time we departed our stay, we were treated like a special house guest. This is a 5 star bed and breakfast. We loved the breakfast buffet each morning and have to say that Miss Betty was very hospitable each morning. The afternoon wine and hor'evers and the evening turn down made you feel even special. Our hats are off to all that made our stay memorable and we will certainly stay again and have already told friends about it. It is worth every dollar!

Excellent in all respects!

Wonderful, old world style and grace. We have travelled extensively and this hotel is in our top three hotels in the world. The staff is friendly, helpful and dedicated to service. Our room was so comfortable and spacious we were reluctant to leave it. There are tons of excellent perks of the highest quality throughout your stay with no added expense. The staff offers a wealth of information regarding the history of the house, the history of Charleston, where to go, where to eat and anything else you may want to know. I have used Trip Advisor at least a hundred times and I have never felt the need to write a review until I stayed here. Wentworth Mansion deserves the praise.

Better than home!

by A TripAdvisor Member

My husband and I were married at the Wentworth Mansion and it was a small and perfect wedding!
We then returned when I was pregnant and it was the only time during those 9 months that I actually slept through the night, it's that comfortable. You can also order their mattresses for a very reasonable price. I promise to do this when we are in need of a new one! For the third time, we stayed with our then 7 month old daughter. It felt like home, only better. The staff set up a comfy crib for our baby and we never once felt out of place having a child there. Anytime we needed a rickshaw, the staff was happy to call one for us. When we'd leave to go out and walk Charleston in the heat, Miss Betty was there handing us cold bottled water. Their truffles at turndown service are to die for, as is their delicious European breakfast. Of course we'll be going back!!!

Great place to honeymoon!

We stayed at the Wentworth Mansion for two nights at the end of October. We took advantage of the Inn-Saver package, staying in a mansion room for two nights. The package also included a $50 gift certificate to Circa 1886, but we decided not to eat there (we heard later from other guests that we made the right choice to skip their Halloween dinner).

Our room was huge! The bed was comfortable and it was nice using the gas fireplace. The TV was a little bulky getting in and out of the armoire, but we didn't spend much time watching it anyway. The bathroom was probably our favorite part! The jacuzzi tub was nice and relaxing (it's also big enough to fit 2).

The free breakfast was far better than we expected. We filled up a couple of plates and brought them back up to our room to eat on the daybed and read the complementary USA today.

The wine and appetizers at 5 were a nice treat too. One night, we took our drinks up to the roof and enjoyed the sunset.

The staff was very helpful and courteous. They always greeted us properly (something we weren't used to) and they also helped us get reservations for dinner both nights.

They only complaint we had (a very minor one), was that we didn't get turn-down service either night we were there. We had gone out to dinner both nights and it would have been nice to return to a clean room.

The Mansion was a few blocks away from King and Meeting street, but it wasn't a bad walk. We ended up taking a jitney back after dinner (cost about $9).

We would definitely stay here again (if we can afford it)!

Suductive, romantic, love den

Beautiful Hotel!!! My girlfriend and I were up until at least 8am every night enjoying the room and our first "romantic" experiences together. The in room jacuzzi and fireplace in the room we had really do a lot to set the mood. The room is huge and the decor is perfect. There are about 10 super soft pillows and a comfy bed. Make sure to check out the roof. Beautiful view. We had a couples massage that was the best I've had (out of about 7 I've had before). The spa is calming and filled with castle like stone but comfy. The staff was very accomadating for our unusual requests(like bottles of wine at 4am) We walked almost everywhere we went. I will certainly be staying there again.

My husband and I stayed for two nights for our anniversary. It was the perfect choice. The room was luxurious and beautiful. Big Jacuzzi tub, comfy bed, working gas fireplace. The staff was more than accomodating. One thing I especially appreciated was the fact that they don't nickel and dime the guests. A wonderful breakfast, wine and appetizers in the afternoon, a fridge with sodas and water--are all included. They also let us use a DVD player at no charge. We both had a massage at the spa and they were fabulous. I highly recommend this hotel.
