 | Lublin Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 92 | | I discovered this church during my second visit to Lublin. After I'd seen the Holy Trinity Chapel with the wonderful polychrome paintigs, I thought that was all that king Wladyslaw Jagiello had founded in Lublin... Well, I was wrong. He also founded the church of Our Lady of Victory to commemorate his victory over the Teutonic knights in 1410. The chuch does not look anything special on the outside (wonder why they put plaster on it...), but the inside is excellent old gothic. I was also quite surprised to see the descending stairs inside the church! Made me think the ground was actually much lower in those days and the steps were added much later. It gave me a completely new perspective on Lublin... I thought it used to be "just" a town in mediaeval Poland, and now I could see it was important to kings! Leave a Comment Address: Narutowicza St.

I missed the well as I was cruising straight towards the tower, and I noticed it only on my way to the Trinity chapel. I think the well is cute, and isn't the wheel impressive? I wonder how many men it takes to turn the wheel... ;-) The well is in the corner to your right immediately as you enter the courtyard so it's easy to miss it 'cause you're with your back to it the minute you enter the yard. By the way, the well somewhow reminded me of the old well in Kazimierz Dolny market square, only that one was much smaller. Leave a Comment

So here's the Grodzka Gate that was another entry to the town in the old days. This is where the Grodzka street ends and the gangway towards the castle begins. My intro page picture shows the Gate (and the gangway) from the opposite side. So far in my must-see tips, I've guided you from the centre of Lublin, through the Cracow Gate, and the martket square towards the castle... But if you arrive to Lublin by bus, you actually start from the opposite direction 'cause the bus station is below the castle on the other side of the street. Leave a Comment Address: End of Grodzka street

This square is called "After the Church" (Po Farze)... because the old mediaeval church is no longer there. That's where the narrowest little street called "To the Church" takes you to. You can see only the church's stone foundations, but it's quite impressive to look at and try to tell where the pillars were, the presbyterium, the side chapels, etc. It seems to be a popular place to meet up and go out somewhere in the old or the new Lublin. Leave a Comment Directions: To your right when going along Grodzka St. from the market square to the castle.

This used to be a Jesuites' church and now is the Lublin cathedral under the invocation of John the Baptist & John the Evangelist. Excellent example of 17th. c. baroque architecture and art with beautiful polychromes on the walls! I couldn't take more pictures because of the scaffoldings inside, some serious restoration was going on... Similarly outside in the Cathedral Sq. - it was overtaken by a crane and buldoser-type vehicles. Leave a Comment Address: 10 Krolewska St, at the Cathedral Sq.Directions: South from the market square: exit towards Jezuicka St., and within minutes you're there.

The current look of the building dates back to the 18th c. but the building itself originated in the 15th c. as the Town Hall. It became the Crown's Tribunal in 1578 when king Stefan Batory appointed it to be the ultimate court for the Malopolska region as well as a few other south-eastern regions which are now no longer within Poland's boundaries. When I found this out, I was struck yet again - I had no idea Lublin was so important a few centuries ago! The legend of the Devil's Claw (see my General Tips) talks exactly about this Tribunal. Currently the building houses the Town Hall History Museum and the Crown's Tribunal Museum . Classical music concerts also take place there, and in when I visited Lublin in September, there was an international Young Violinists' Contest going on. Leave a Comment Address: Right in the centre of the Old Town market square.

Grodzka Street takes you from the Old Town square to the castle. It descends towards the Grodzka Gate and then opens up as the gangway to the castle. As you go down the street, you see the old Grodzka Gate ahead and the more contemporary parts of the 'new' Lublin in the distance. That's an interesting contrast, but I guess my photo doesn't show it well.. I should have taken another picture as I approached the gate :-( I guess it used to be the high street in the old times' Lublin. And be sure to look at all the buildings you're passing by! Some of them are still shabby and wait for their turn to be rennovated, some other ones are all done up in vibrant colours and shiny... If you're after some art pieces and souvenirs, that's the street to go! You'll find a few galleries and gift stores in the street. And some restaurant-pubs, of course :-) Leave a Comment Directions: Just off the market square, to your left if you entered through the Cracow Gate.

I think the romanesque tower is the best piece in the courtyard... All the rest was rebuilt in the 19th c. into neo-gothic, so it was just too modern in comparison with that brick monster! The tower itself was built in the 13th c. and was a part of the castellan seat in Lublin, so it was both inhabited and served as a fortress. Its walls are up to 3.4m (~10 ft) thick! I just sat down on a bench outside and looked at it speechless... It is so bold and stern, that it almost looks back at you with some reserve... I don't know what it is about romanesque and gothic structures that I just can't take my eyes off them... Is it the purity of the form... or could it be that I once lived in a building like that in some distant past... Naaah...! - had a cigarette and then went to see the castle's chapel. Leave a Comment Directions: For goodness sake, just go through the castle's gate! ;-)

Ku Farze St. (To the Church St.) is probably the narrowest street in Lublin's Old Town. It looks like the sun has never seen the pavement there ;-) The street is still called "To the Church", although the mediaeval church is no longer there... Leave a Comment Directions: You'll see it on your left when heading towards the castle. Watch out, it's so narrow you could miss it!

One of the main old city gates leading into Lublin's Old Town is called after the city of Cracow. The gate, as well as the city's fortification walls, was built in the middle of 14th c., shortly after a great Tatar attack on Lublin. It is one of the best known symbols of Lublin and is quite an imposing structure! It started as gothic, then it was made bigger and some renaissance elements were added to it, and finally it underwent some baroque changes. The square in front of the gate was the main trading area and - just imagine that - in the 16th c. the gate had little porches for trumpeters and musicians who played their tunes to the crowd! Nowadays you can buy souvenirs and local artists' paintings in the gateway. So a little bit of the trading tradition is still there... Above the entrance you will see a picture of the Virgin Mary, click here for a close-up view. You can also go here to see how the gate looked before 1939. Leave a Comment Directions: At the exit of Krakowskie Przedmiescie St. towards the Old Town.
