Lublin Airport in Świdnik is built right now, it should be ready and accepting planes in October 2012.

The best way before then is to fly to Warsaw (Okęcie airport), and go to Lublin by train, or by bus.

Trains from Warsaw to Lublin cost around 37-50 PLN and the travel lasts around 2h 20m (depending on operator and class). You can check possible trains there http://rozklad-pkp.pl/?q=en/node/143 (choose Warszawa Centralna to Lublin, click "Search" 2 times, I don't know why :)

There is also airport in Rzeszów, which has worse train and bus connection to Lublin, and Kraków, which is much further (and trains from Kraków to Lublin goes by Warsaw, which is very not in straight lin, but what can youd do).

Busses from Warsaw to Lublin costs around 20 PLN, and the travel lasts 2-3 hours depending on how much risky the driver is ;).

Minibus Lublin - Kazimierz Dolny
4 more images

Once we took a daytrip from Lublin to Kazimierz Dolny. We went there by minibus and returned by bus.

Kazimierz Dolny is served from Lublin by more than 10 mini buses daily and quite a few buses.

Tickets can be bought from the driver and cost between 6 PLN and 8,70 PLN depending on the means of transport.

Other destinations which can be reached by bus or minibus from Lublin include most major Polish towns, but also Chelm, Kielce, Naleczow, Sandomierz and Zamosc, just to name a few.

Lublin's bus station is located just north of the castle, across the busy street Al. Tysiaclecia, whereas the minibus station can be found one block further north.

Train at Lublin train station
4 more images

We arrived in Lublin by direct train from Warsaw. In May 2010 a single ticket for the 175 km long trip cost 37 PLN and the journey time was about 2,5 h.

We left Lublin by direct train to Przemysl (228 km). The price for a single ticket was 44 PLN and the trip took just over 4 hours.

Lublin's train station is located about 2 km to the south of the city centre. If you don't have much luggage it is still a very walkable distance. Another option to get to town are the buses #1, #13 and trolleybus #150.

Besides Warsaw and Przemysl, Lublin has also direct train connections to Chelm, Kielce, Krakow and Pulawy.

Lublin is a very walkable city. The old town is very compact and in theory it can be explored within just a few hours.

Also most sights, which are located outside of the old town are still in convenient walking distance.

There are even 5 signposted tourist routes which can be followed:

Jagiellonian trail of Lublin union (1,5 km), Jewish heritage trail (2,5 km), multicultural trail (2,5 km), trail of architectural monuments (3,5 km) and trail of famous Lubliners (3 km).

Trolleybus at Lublin's train station
1 more image

Lublin's public transport consists of buses and trolleybuses. As the touristy city centre is very compact we did all sightseeing on foot.

Only to get from our accomodation to the train station we once used a bus. Tickets can be bought at kiosks in advance or directly from the driver.

In May 2010 a single ticket cost 2,40 PLN. After boarding the bus it has to be validated immediately in one of the machines.

If you are planning to visit the concentration camp in Majdanek, which is located 4 km southeast of the city centre then bus #23 or trolleybuses #153, #156 and #158 will take you there.

Take a bus to the train station :-p

Trains between Lublin and Warsaw leave at a rate of about 1 per hour, the trip takes approximately 2 1/2 hours, and the price is about 35PLN (about $16). Lublins railway station (PKP) is not really that close to the center of town though (the bus station is very close to the center).

Lublin Railway Station Platform

Polish State Railway (PKP, an acronym for Polskie Koleje Panstwowe) offers a network of connections from and to Lublin. Tickets are constantly growing in price but I need to admit that level of service is getting better and better as well.

Lublin railway station was recently rebuilt and restored. It's clean and looks safe.

Small private buses constitute a popular means of transport to and from Lublin. They run mainly on shorter routes such as Lublin-Kazimierz or Lublin-Pulawy but you can easily find a small private bus to Warsaw too.

They're quite inexpensive, run on time and allow for a moderately comfortable journey.

Lublin Trolley-Bus

Lublin seems to be one of the few cities in Poland operating trolley-buses. They're not much different from 'normal' buses, the only thing about them is that they need to stay on route as they're powered by electricity.

Lublin : My return train ticket to Warsaw...

From Lublin, I took the train back to Warsaw; To me on that day, it was a mighty fine experience visiting Pulawy, Kazimierz Dolny & Lublin : 3 of the most beautiful places that I have been to in Poland!
On the left was my (Return) Warsaw-Lublin train ticket.
There are about half a dozen fast trains daily to Warsaw - 175 km.
Also, there are 2 fast trains to Krakow - 345 km.
