Mountain biking fun

Can't believe I'm writing a 'sporting tip'!!

Right then! This is really on the recommendation of house guests (sporty ones) who took themselves off for a day of mountain biking and had a fabulous day. They went with John from "Blazing Trails" who was an excellent guide, asked lots of questions about what they wanted from the day and their fitness levels and provided them with an great day out in fantastic scenery.

Equipment: They took the train to Alora (on the local cercania line) where John picked them up, all the bikes and helmets were provided.

Basketball with me

If you come over a few days and you like basketball, I offer you the chance to shoot some hoops with me. During this year I've been playing every week with a very good group of friends in the evening, but the indoor sports center will be close in summertime. We consider ourself as low-mid level players, with a couple of good skilled ones.

Basketball has been the best way to find friends quickly everywhere I've moved, in Spain, UK... Malaga has a good tradition of basketball in Europe. In fact, this year (2007) our pro team has played the Euroleague Final Four in Athens, with three Spanish National Team members in our roster who won the World Championship in Japan in summer 2006.

If you are interested, send me a message a couple of weeks before and we'll see if we can play and maybe have a drink after with the teammates.

Equipment: you know, comfortable sport shoes and shorts...

Han jugado la euroliga en los últimos 2 años y la jugarán los próximos 3 años. Uno de sus jugadores, Jorge Garbajosa juega actualmente en la NBA en los Toronto Raptors.

El Peon

El Peñon is a natural stony beach about 5km west of Malaga. The beach has no facilities apart from parking and showers but is really nice.

There is an excelent paved path for walking or cycling along the coast on the roue of the old railway, through tunnels in the cliffs, towards Rincon and parts east.

Playa Misericordia

Playas Huellen,San Andres, Misericordia and La Guadalhorce
These beaches run west from Malagas port along a the new Antonio Machada promenade to the river Guadalhorce.

There are numerous stalls on the beach where you can sit down and have a beer and grilled sardines.

Malagueta Beach

This is the beach nearest to the east of Malaga City, 10 mins walk from the centre. Together with la Calletta they form a beach about 2 km long, skirted by a wide promenade for walking or cycling. The sand nearest the promendade is hard, good for running or jogging, with distance markers every 400 meters.

The beaches have shower facilities, several beach fish restaurants (chiringuitos) where sardines are barbacued to order.

The beach areas in Malaga are Malagueta, La Calleta and Banos de Carmen east of the port, and to the west. Playas de Huellin, San Andres, Misericordia and Guadalhorce.

The beaches are man made , millions of tons of sand from local rivers are dumped on the beach replacing that lost by storms.
