Founded in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, the current structure began construction in 1645 under the fifth Dalai Lama and took more than 50 years to complete. Its architectural features are impressive even by modern standards, showcasing a unique layout with the White Palace for living quarters and the Red Palace for religious purposes.
