Drinking Alcohol in KL

by city_guy

Alcohol is quite expensive in Malaysia, partly because it's prohibited for Muslims and the import duties tend to be high. A glass of beer can be a pricey RM15 (US$4.00) and a good glass of scotch can set you back RM20 (US$5.00).

One way of smart drinking would be to purchase the entire bottle and consume it within the day or a few days if you're going to be entertaining friends or business partners as most bars, clubs and lounges allow you to do so. Usually the mixer and ice would come along free with your purchase, just tell 'em what you like. This would roughly set you back RM 220 - 300 (US$50-80) for the bottle.

Beers are a favourite among the locals too. You have the luxury of choosing from Carlsberg, Anchor, Tiger and some imported beers through tap. Generally a mug of beer would cost RM12-14(US3-4) and if you order a pitcher/jug of beer it'll cost you RM40-50 (US$10-15).

Here's a tip for cheaper beer drinking;
Look for the 'Happy Hours' which are usually from 5.00pm - 10.00pm at most outlets as they sell draft beer and liquor 30% - 50% cheaper than the normal price.

For a slightly more sedate pace, head towards Bangsar as this is a pleasant area with streets lined with bars and restaurants. Most of the bars offer open air seating, and you can people-watch while sipping your brew of choice. Go early to avoide a full house.

"Ladies night" is another popular crowd puller at most outlets. Mind you this offer is for ladies only, not a night where ladies are only allowed into the outlets.

This ladies-offer is a gimmick to attract the ladies giving them free beer and liquor all night long. Usually set on Wednesday's or Thursdays, some outlets choose Fridays too. The formula? Simple, free drinks for ladies, ladies come and where the women are, the men come.

So, if you're a lady with a love for drinking, lookout for these offers and it'll save you and your friends a load of money which can be used on other shopping stuff.

Here I am, inside the National...

by Jillworld

Here I am, inside the National Mosque. I was suprised here, because I had made a point of wearing long pants, and a sleeved shirt and I STILL had to put all of this on. I was very warm! We enjoyed wandering around this large, modern mosque. It also afforded great views of KL's skyline, and varied architectural styles.

Dress respectfully

by austarman

The mosque stands diagonally opposite the Kuala Lumpur Old Railway Station in a five hectare landscaped garden. It's reputed as one of the more beautiful mosques in South-east Asia.
The umbrella-shaped dome, with 18 points representing the 13 states of Malaysia and the five pillars of Islam.
The minaret is 73 meters high.

Visitors are advised to observe the rules of dressing and decorum which are listed at the entrance.
