More about The Federal Kuala Lumpur
A Decent option
by TripAdvisor Member The_Rochdalien
We stayed for 4 nights during November 2006. Following other reviews we booked a room in the Merdeka Wing. This was fine, clean and reasonably presented. Breakfast buffet was edible but worth exploring other options if you can, revolving restaraunt probably best avoided. Location is good, wide choice of dining nearby (Bombay Jams is a must), major attractions a short hop by taxi or walk to nearby monorail stations. Decent shopping complexes very close by. No problems with staff, all were friendly and efficient and helped with information on coach transfers to Cameron Highlands.
Tired but Great Value
by TripAdvisor Member SumitDattani
Stayed here for 3 nights in 2005 and were pleasantly surprised by the size of the rooms. The decor and condition of the room (and bathroom), however, was a bit tired and could have been better maintained.
The breakfast was OK and the bar downstairs (in the shopping complex) had some great happy hour offers and cheesy live music.
The location is great as its pretty central to all the malls and markets. In a city where most hotels seem to be overpriced - Federal Hotel offered us the best value for money within the 3-4 star range.
Never....EVER again
by TripAdvisor Member js1395
On the way home from austrailia we decided to do an over night stay in Kuala Lumpur. On booking were advised this was a four stra hotel and judging by the glossy pictures we were confident. I always try to be positive when judging a hotel, but in al honesty this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. On entering our room I instantly wished we'd caught the next flight to the uk and continued traveling.
On entering the hotel, the reception/ looby area appears very grand and welcome relief after 13 hour flight plus added travel time. We were given no assistance and merely pointed in the direction of our room. Fine, a lack of hospitality can be over looked, it was late and perhaps the people working were equally tired.
Anyway we took the corrider offthe lobby and the whole decor changed!!! It was a darkly lit corrider, with very low ceilings & an unmistakeable smell of damp and mould. When we reached our room, it was also poorly lit and the horrible smell continued.
The window wouldnt open, and the view??? a wall! We were all so tired, we had a quick wash ( the bathroom wasnt too bad, not up to four star standard, but accepatable). We wanted to go straight to bed. The bedding was so disgusting, we slept fully clothed. We also spotted some unidentifiable bug creepy around in the darkness.
Why didnt we complain? just too tired, looking back I really wish I had.
The next morning we had breakfast, in a very nice dining area, and the food was great.
We almost felt as though we had been ushered into the dodgy area of the hotel, because apart from the corriders and room, the lobby and restuarent were lovely.
On check out we were asked if we had used the mini bar...... to which we replied there WASNT one!!
If you've booked try your best to change, that one night was the worst hotel experience Ive ever had.
Federal Hotel= Stay Away!!

THE GOOD : Location! walking distance to all the major malls n clubs. View from room. We could see the lights of the twin towers at night! Nice! We were stayin in the double deluxe room....in the new mederka wing. THE BAD : Da Phat Man HATES this hotel! Bugs...roaches.....bugs......roaches....bugs.....roaches....n vampire teeth bug that bit beauty on ankle. Eww! Gross! The shower was disgusting......Phat Man wears his slippers INTO the bathtub! No hand towels in hotel! waited 2 hours just to get some extra towels from house-keeping.....but that is only after we called them up the 2nd time.Beauty has no paitience for bad service! They charge for use of internet at their "business center" which is bascially just 2 computers on 2 tables next to reception. Breakfast was horrible.....no selection......beauty was horrified! breakfast was a big thing! lol the rooms are NOTHING like how they discribed on the websites....even the pics dun look like the room we had. HORRIBLE............DIRTY...DISGUESTING! This is a 2 star hotel not the 3 or 4 star they discribed it to be! maybe it was 5 star when Austin Powers stayed there in the 1950s!! the bed and bed sheets dun even look like the pics! Phat Man almost cried! LoL The garden and pool was horrriblly dirty! Phat Man says you might get Herpes-gonna-syphills-aids just dipping in that water! I think I saw a couple bugs inside having a good time though.Bottom line dun waste your money! There r better hotels in that area for the same price.....even the backpacker lodge (haven) looks cleaner then Federal. Dun let the outside appearance of the hotel fool you! Phat Man said u will get a better nite sleep behind macdonald's in the alley!!!!! DUN SAY WE DIDNT WARN YA!!!!
Average - a little faded - excellent location

Came to KL on a late (delayed several hours) flight from Kota Kinabalu and had communicated to the staff at Federal that we would check in late at night. Check in was uneventful but quite slow.
Our room was ok, a bit time worn and the refurbishment was not of good quality in the bathroom and will need to be redone within a year or so. Otherwise room was clean and spacious. The breakfast good and with a great spread both asian and western selections.
Federal has a lot of business services that we did not use, although we bought some Moon cakes from the hotel restaurant to bring home, the concergie recommended us to talk to the restaurant manager for good Moon Cakes and they were excellent.
Location is excellent, with walking distance to Time Square, Imbi Plaza, Lot 10 and transit services. Hotel got us a taxi when we were to leave for the airport and they made sure we knew the cost and got a taxi that used a meter.
Pleasantly surprised by the Federal

My husband and I stayed at the Federal in January 2007 and found it clean, comfortable, no bugs and the bathroom very nice and properly working. I had read bad reviews on Trip Advisor after booking and paying for our five night stay and was worried that our holiday would be ruined. I emailed the hotel and expressed my concerns about lack of views and damp and smelly rooms with bad bathrooms and got a reply assuring me that we would be looked after. Our room was very spacious on the 7th floor at the front with a wonderful view of the city and had obviously been refurbished recently. We couldn't fault the service, breakfast, view or the room and the location was great with lots of cheap places to eat in the street. We also had a meal in the revolving restaurant and that was fine too. I would love to stay there again and am disappointed to still read bad reviews so parts of the hotel must still be dodgy and in need of updating. We found it very clean and comfortable.
Great Location Hotel
by TripAdvisor Member MyAttitude
We stayed in this hotel from 31st May 2007 to 3rd June 2007.
I booked for a deluxe room four months back, requested for a double bed & informed on late check in. In the end, they even upgraded us to a deluxe studio as the other rooms are full.
The aircon is not cold enough, maybe due to the full occupancy. The room we had is overall good, nothing to be complained about. The toilet is clean & spacious.
The buffet breakfast spread is quite disappointing, not as much variety as I have expected, since most people reviewed here claimed that the breakfast is good.
Location is excellent. Do try local food at Jalan Alor, which is just 10 min walk away. For computer parts, do visit Low Yat Plaza, which is the building next door.
Let's hunt the bugs
by TripAdvisor Member floe
Was stayed here on Dec 2006, we booked via travel agent and we booked deluxe room because it the website looks nice. from location wise is perfect, BB park just a few steps away and a lot of shopping complex within walking distance.
However when we first get the room, they give us twin sharing room while we asked for Queen/ king bed room. so we called the reception and asked to relocate.
they said the only available room that have queen bed is a room in the corner with no view...so we just accepted this as we thought we could compromised with this.
Yes the carpet look dirty but the bed sheet was okay. but problem start arised in the next day, our 1 year old son had a happy hunt for the small cocroach came from under the bed also from back of the side table. a minute after I went to bathroom and find even bigger insect.
We called the housekeeping and asked for the bug spray when they start to make up the room. so we left the room and when we came back on late afternoon we found a small game boy for our son, it must be the initiative from the house keeping lady. we really appreciated, and the room was looked okay. so we thought no bugs will appear again, guess we were wrong. in the evening, some bugs came out again and my son enjoyed to hunt them down. Apparently these bugs are not so easy to diminished
due to this bad experience I will not stayed here ever again unless they have all room refurbished.
such a bad thing consider the location is great.
Great location but shows its age
by TripAdvisor Member Bricari
Whilst this is a hotel in a great location for exploring the shopping centres we encountered some difficulties from the beginning. Upon arrival in the late afternoon we were advised that our room was not yet ready. Shortly afterwards we were provided with a room on the 7th floor with a view of the external wall of another room of the Federal some 3 metres away, and with an accompanying sound of load wind whistleing. This is a room that should be provided as a last resort. Upon complaining we were upgraded to a deluxe in the older part of the hotel, which whilst being recently refurbished it had loose wires protruding from sockets. We also found that there was insufficient information on the restrauants in the hotel, although we had a great meal in the Irish bar on the basement level. Good location but there are better in the inner city.
Keep well away!
by TripAdvisor Member nomasaussie
My wife and I stayed(?) here July 2007 on the understanding it had been completely refurbished. What a disappointment.
The room was an absolute disgrace! On and around the toilet seat was fecal matter, the bath was badly stained and the wall tiles were thick with soap scum. This room had obviously not been cleaned for some time.
The carpets were badly stained and chewing gum was smeared across two walls near the bed. The whole room smelled of cigarette smoke. All this in what is supposed to be a 4 star hotel!
Needless to say we didn't hang around.

It's an old hotel and not so popular nowadays as there are many other hotels around. But for Bukit Bintang area, it is more cheaper compared to Marriot or Regent.

Hi!
Yes, its an old hotel but it is not that bad either. Some of the rooms have been refurbished - ask for the new wing if possible when check in. Being among the earliest hotel in KL give it the advantage of being right in the middle of almost everything in KL's Bukit Bintang.
