I've just heard from the relevant people that lately there have been "tour guides" that offer tourists cheap tickets to go up to the Sky Bridge at the PETRONAS Twin Towers. They get a group of tourists together, then go off to fetch the tickets and charge these tourists something like RM10 per ticket. Please remember THE TRIP UP TO THE SKY BRIDGE IS FREE!! You just have to go and get the tickets from the counters which open at 8.30 a.m. The view isn't THAT brilliant from the Sky Bridge because you are behind glass and it's not really very high up at Level 41, but hey.. it's free and you get to see the building inside.

Tickets may run out fast since there's a limit of 1400 people up to the Sky Bridge per day so go early and be prepared to wait. Group tours are timed (I think 8.30 - 10.30 a.m. and 2.00 - 4.00 p.m.) and restricted to 20 people per session. But again... it's free, so don't complain too much huh.

I wouldn't say not to go at all, it's nice that you can see an overview of the KLCC Park and the surrounds but if you want a better view of the KL city skyline you may want to go up the KL Tower instead. There is a revolving restaurant there with a wide variety of food which sucks, however. You can also get McDonald's but the food is not much better actually. But with the KL Tower, you have to pay. The Sky Bridge is free...!

Taxi Driver Scams: KLIA Airport Taxi - Budget or Premier
  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting out of KLIA, you'll have a choice of the taxi or the Express Rail Link (ERL a.k.a CAT). Getting a taxi is not a problem. However, if you are in Kuala Lumpur for the first time, the people at the Official KLIA Taxi Counter will ask you whether you want a Premier Taxi or a Budget Taxi. Most of the time they will tell you to take the premier taxi - which is expensive comparatively to the budget taxi

Scenarios that you may encounter at the Official Taxi Counter for Budget and Premier Taxis Scenario 1 They will ask you how persons are with you. If you say 2 or more persons with large pieces of luggages, they will say you cannot take the budget taxi. You will have to take the premier taxi Scenario 2 Other times they will tell you that the queue for the budget taxi is too long and you may have to wait half an hour to 45mins for a taxi. Hence you are advised to get the Premier Taxi. Actually your wait should not be more than 15 mins. Scenario 3 You will be told there are no more budget taxis available. .

So, If you are in Kuala Lumpur, say 2 of you (or less) with 3 large pieces of luggage - you can still fit into the Budget Taxi. (Updated Dec06 - the KLIA airport taxis are slowly converting to the Hyundai cars which may not be able to fit 3 large pieces of luggage. 2 large ones may be just fine. If you find you can't fit in the budget taxi, you can still change. Just a bit inconvenient.) Please insist you want a Budget Taxi. They may not want a scene. Even though they will ask how many persons and/or pieces of luggage you have. Just maintain your stand and insist you want a Budget Taxi. No buts and ifs. You should be alright. BTW if there are 3 of you with 4 pieces of luggage or more, you may not fit in Budget taxi. Anyway, its not as bad as Ho Chi Minh's Taxis appreciate your rating :)

Taxi Driver Scams: City Tour? No Meter.....
  • Tip Rating:
  • The taxi's in KL are unlike anywhere I have ever been in my life. They stop at a Taxi que and ask where you are going, if they don't want to go there, they ask the next person in line, and the next...... Very odd! Also, very RARELY do the cabbies run the meter - they seem to want to charge whatever they want and take you on a "city tour" while they're at it. Nothing is worse then trying to get to 1 destination and the driver takes you the other direction to try and get more cab fare out of you........ On weekends cab drivers were a little more likely to run the meter, apparently it's a good 2nd job in KL, so on the weekends you have more drivers and it changes the supply/demand scale a bit more in your favor.

Ask how much before getting in the cab - and haggle. Don't be afraid to say NO and wait for the next one (it will NOT be a long wait even if a few pass your destination by). Sit in the front seat and be aware of where you want to go (It's fairly easy to see the general layout of the city in your head with the towers in the skyline) There are a lot of 1-way streets so sometimes it seems they are going the long way, but they are legitimately trying to get you on the right side of the street.

    Chinatown: Beware Of Rip-Offs
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you lost some money that should be OK. Plenty of poor people around, so at least someone else can gain from what you lost. But don't lose you warts and moles and also your dignity if you come out of this with more then before you went in ! But then, it's a free world, you can always try if you're convinced ..

Get your friend to go along with you !

Taxi Driver Scams: KL Taxis are the WORST in the world
  • Tip Rating:
  • The taxi drivers will do anything to rip you off in KL. They will press buttons to increase the fare, take the "scenic" route, try and overcharge, argue, fight and fuss

Insist on using the meter. Always keep your eyes on it (sit in the front passenger seat) and have an idea of the route to take. If they give you trouble then write down the taxi number and complain to the taxi authority - you have to help stop this - dont just ignore it.

At the airport you can get a fixed price taxi to KL and back. Taxis have a 50% surcharge from midnight to 6am.

Many birds, just a few of them free sadly.
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is known as the largest covered bird park in the world, the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is a haven for birds amidst a tropical paradise. Located in the city centre yet somehow cut off from the hustle and bustle of city life, pity is that only a small part of the birds are free, most of them are in cages so you really have the idea of a sad zoo more than a bird park. Price RM 22

Butterfly park is much better and you do not have the sensation of enjoying animals in cages.

Genting Highlands: They paved paradise, and put up Genting Highlands
  • Tip Rating:
  • At night the bright glow of Genting Highlands atop a hill about a 45-minute drive from KL beckons invitingly. So you make the trek, and what do you find? A denuded hilltop with a noisy, crowded, gawdy, monstrous cluster of constructions where once there was only virgin forest. What is Genting? A place where you can go to gamble, ride on amusement park rides, play games in a video arcade, experience a fake winter with artificial snow, eat on the run, shop at the same outlets available in the city, and generally leave poorer than when you arrived--both in pocketbook and spirit.

Skip the "entertainment" and head for the cable car. You'll have lots of time to take pictures as you glide over virgin rainforest.

A better choice, if you're anxious to get away from the heat and humidity of KL, is to go further away from the capital (200 km) to Cameron Highlands. This hill resort, in addition to its appeal as a tourist destination, also boasts Malaysia's premier tea plantations. A visit to these is well worth the trip. Another alternative is Bukit Frasier, about 100 km from KL. If you're a golfer, there's a nine-hole course. Otherwise, bring a good book and enjoy the spring-like weather.

Petronas Twin Towers: Sky Bridge at the PETRONAS Twin Towers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lately there has been "tour guides" offering tourists cheap tickets to go up to the Sky Bridge at the PETRONAS Twin Towers. Modus operandi ~ Get a group of tourists together, ~ then go off to the counter to obtain tickets then ~ charge these tourists something like RM5 - RM10 per ticket. Viewing from the Sky Bridge is FREE!!!! Just go and get the tickets from the counters which open at 8.30 a.m. But let me say the view isn't that exciting. and its only at level 41. However its fun. There is a limit to the number of people allowed up there.

    Just get there by 830am.

    China Town - Kuala Lumpur
  • Tip Rating:
  • Petaling street in Kuala Lumpur is like a large market where you can get "designer" goods at somewhat better prices but the people who work there, will not necessarily give you a good pirce not matter how good it sounds in the exchange. the goods are also not good. Ive bought things like sunglasses and watches there which havent lasted longer than a few wears... The place is also full of tourists, and you end up squeeezing through everyone, getting really hot and frustrated as well....

Take care of your belongings, keep your docs in a safe place and dont be afriad to walk away from a sale. If they really want to make a sale, they'll run after you.

Try going to a smaller town and you'll find similar things, but minus the hundreds of tourists and pasty white people. You'll probably get a much better deal than you would have in Petaling street.

Taxi Driver Scams: Beware of 'Taxi Touts' on arrival at KLIA, M'sia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Always, someone is bound to get tricked into getting a taxi by 'touts' as soon as you exit the arrival hall. The authorities have tried to curb this menace, but somehow, these 'touts' are still there. so, below are some tips on how to get your transportation to the city. Mind you the city is around 75km from the airport. ☼

At the Satellite Terminal Building, look out for a currency changer counter(Money Changer) or bank to change your currency to Malaysian currency (RM = Ringgit Malaysia; US$1.00 = RM$3.80 or better). You need RM$ to pay for your train or taxi fare later. Taxis use the coupon system and taxi booths are available upon exit from the Arrival Hall. There is a choice of an airport limousine service as well as a budget taxi service. The registered taxis can be boarded after buying coupons from Airport Limo counter at Level 3-Arrival Hall (at the exit immediately after clearing customs). Then queue up near Door 3 at Level 3 to board the registered metered taxis. Show your coupon to a person on duty before boarding a taxi. The taxi journey takes 50 to 90 minutes (depending on the general traffic condition on the roads). Public bus services to the city are available one floor down from the Arrival Hall. ☼

ERL - Express Rail Link or KLIA Express After coming out of the exit immediately after clearing customs, you are at Level 3 (Arrival Hall). Take a lift down to Level 1 to take the KLIA Ekspres (trains) to KL Sentral Station. Cost: RM35.00 (adult, single trip) or RM70.00 (adult; return trip) There are also promotional group/family rates. Pls inquire at the counter. RM15.00(child 3-12 yrs, single trip) RM25.00 (senior citizen, single trip) Please ASK if you qualify for this rate! ☼First Train: 5.00 am ☼Last Train: 1.00 am ☼Frequency: Every 15 minutes ☼Travelling Time: 28 minutes (non-stop) ☺
